Slinky, secretive and spotted all over, this quoll is Australia’s answer to a big cat –although it is not that big, and it is definitely not a cat. This carnivorous marsupial, dubbed ‘native cat’ by colonists, was one of the first animals encountered by Europeans at Port Jackson in 1788. Since then, its habitat has been cleared and its range drastically reduced. Both Queensland subspecies (Dasyurus maculatus and the northern D. m. gracilis) are now endangered in the state. Distinguishable by its robust size, nimbleness in the treetops, and its unmissable spotted tail, it’s a true Aussie battler able to take down much-larger prey if necessary.
