Owning the title of the continent’s weirdest critter, this cute egg-laying mammal with its electroreceptive bill, webbed feet, water-resistant fur and fat-storing tail was considered a hoax when museum collectors first sent a specimen to England in 1799. When you see a platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) happily snuffling around a waterway, diving for invertebrates, it is easy to see why some Indigenous Dreaming stories suggest the creature resulted from a love affair between a duck and a rakali (water rat). One of only two egg-laying mammals on the planet, the platypus is declining due to pollution and degradation of waterways, entanglement, and drowning in opera house yabby traps. Wildlife Queensland’s PlatypusWatch program monitors the species using eDNA and traditional survey techniques to inform conservation management and protect this unique Australian.
